Scaliger, aut pater aut proles, si carmina dictat,
Scaligero solus Scaliger apta canit.
Scaligero patri par nemo, simillima proles
tam patri similis, quam pater ipse sibi.

est pater in nato, aut in patre natus erit.

On Julius and Joseph Scaliger
If a Scaliger, whether the father or the child, composes poetry, only a Scaliger can create something fitting for a Scaliger. No-one is the equal to Scaliger the father, but just as the child, very similar to his father, is like him, so too is the father himself like the child. Scaliger, whether the father or the child, is a single man in two people, as one: whether the father exists in the son, or the son will have existed in the father.
